Some Things About Rapunzel's 'Mother'

These are things that really bother me:
  • 'Mother knows best' [Arrogance]
  • Mocking Rapunzel [Disrespect]
  • Telling Rapunzel that she is not good enough [Lying]
  • Only telling Rapunzel about the 'bad' things in the world [Pessimism]
  • 'All good things to those who wait' [Used in the case for revenge]
  • Uses deception to accomplish her goals (which are selfish) [combination of Lying & Selfishness]
  • Only wants Rapunzel for her hair powers [More Selfishness]

Flynn: Are you ok?
Rapunzel: I'm terrified
Why?
I've been looking out of a window for eighteen years, dreaming about what I might feel like when those lights rise in the sky. What if it's not everything I dreamed it would be?
It will be.
And what if it is? What do I do then?
Well, that's the good part I guess. You get to go find a new dream.

At the ending part with the lanterns, Rapunzel and Flynn are singing a duet, and they are talking about how they finally see each other, and it sounds great, and the scenery is fantastic. And all the girls that are watching the movie are "AWWWWHHHH!!!'-ing and just wriggling with delight in the cute-ness [I'm guessing, I would appreciate it if you let me know for sure ;) ]
Anyway, they are about to kiss, and then Flynn notices something in the background, so he doesn't kiss her. The girls watching the movie seemed pretty disappointed. Again, I am curious about this; mostly as to the girls' thoughts on it :)
This world is dark, and selfish, and cruel. If it finds even the slightest ray of sunshine, it destroys it.

This is from the 'mother' and it is actually accurate, in my opinion. Whatever is not of the world is not welcomed by the world...

If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’ -John 15:18-25

Flynn: I can't let you do this-
Rapunzel: And I can't let you die...
But if you do this, then you will die...
Its gonna be alright!

Is that love or what?!? :D John 15:13! Boo-Yah!

  2. You want some feminine input? I went to see this with my mother, and we could not contain our laughter during the boat scene. We cracked up so hard the other people in the theater turned to look. In the entire movie, which was otherwise excellent, this was one of the few scenes that seemed truly cheesy, hokey, and cliche. It was rivaled only by the "You are my new dream" line. Come on. Really? Can you imagine someone saying that in real life? Can you imagine not cracking up or pushing them over the side of the boat?
    oh, p.s.: I am a girl.

  3. I always appreciate feminine input, Anonymous :) So, thank you for your thoughts!
hahaha well I appreciate your honesty! And I thought the 'you are my new dream' was pretty cute, even if it was cheesy. My understanding, however, is that certain kinds of cheesy are roughly equivalent to cute :P
And I can definitely imagine someone, maybe not saying it, but showing it, in real life. That sounds like something that someone would say after they have met Jesus and after they have a relatively solid relationship with God. Things change when love enters the picture ;) We realize that sitting around with piles of money is not what this life is really about, at least that is something I have learned from my time here.

Again, thank you for your input :) I always appreciate it!

  4. Nick, your guess is right...the girls were saying "AWWWWHHHH!!!" because it was cute.

And the reason why it was diappointing when the two didn't kiss is because it was the perfect moment for them to kiss and just a little while earlier they realized that they are each other's dream and they were really close to kissing and they were giving each other "the eyes" and....yeah. It was disppointing.

  5. I agree that the boat/lantern scene is cheese-tastic but since it's a Disney movie I'll make allowances for it, however unrealistic it may be in real life. Nick, you do touch upon some really good points with the Bible verses you mentioned and how they relate to some of the scenes in Tangled. I thought it was really interesting how they phrase 'good things come to those who wait' could be twisted around when it was applied to an evil, selfish purpose.

Speaking of selfishness, what do you think of the king sending soldiers to find the flower and take it? Once it was dug out of the ground and made into a medicine for the queen, nobody else could benefit directly from the flower again. Obviously people benefit from Rapunzel's hair and tears, but eventually the power will become diluted that it will no longer be effective. Is that just a natural process, or was the king wrong to take the flower?

  6. McKinzie: Ahh, thank you for explaining that! It does make sense when you put it that way :) Hmm...that makes me think about kissing, and why we do it...ahh humans!

Lauren: I suppose I could have added more Bible verses, especially in the list at the top.
And that is a good point, I have not thought about it! I suppose you could make the argument that he was not only saving the life of the queen, but also the life of her daughter, and any children her daughter may have, so in essence it is saving many lives. In that way of thinking, a single murder could be argued to be a mass killing.
Also, he is the king, and the king is not questioned. I know this sort of argument is not as appealing, but it is realistic, in my opinion.
I think you could also say that that sort of healing power is not something that should be around for anyone and everyone to use, as someone would exploit it, as Rapunzel's 'mother' did. (I don't remember her name :/) It is like communism, great in idea, not great in practice. This is because humans are flawed and we corrupt with power.

  7. We were for some reason discussing Tangled a while back...and then I randomly find this today. I'd have to say I like this better than the Facebook note you wrote on it. :) Mainly because of the "whatever is not of the world is hated by the world" line. So true!!

  9. Haha this made me laugh tonight. Thanks. :P

PS-that scene? SUPER cute. I can be quite a girl when it comes to things like that though. Although by now I'm sure you know this.
